Kompass.com covers over 2 million B2B companies in over 60 countries.
Kompass New Zealand covers 15,000 head offices of B2B businesses nationwide.
A Ministry of Economic Development report from 2003 said that 86% of NZ firms have up to 5 employees and account for about 20% of the economy's output but only 10% of wages and salaries paid to employees.

The large difference in numbers is due to the methods of collection and target entities. Kompass profiles the head offices, activities, brands, people, products and services of B2B companies and relevant B2C companies and covers 95% of its target database in New Zealand. The NZ Companies Office counts registered companies. A registered company is not necessarily trading. Kompass is activity based so it does not profile registered non-trading companies.
Yellow or Finda will list anything with a phone number. Kompass is focused on B2B companies and does not include any old retail shop although it does profile the head office of large retail chains.

The Business Demographic Statistics have a much wider scope than Kompass counting geographical units. Kompass has one Bank of New Zealand, this study might have hundreds.
